This blog will chronicle my experience teaching Marketing via New Media at the University of California San Diego Extension (UCSD). The class is 9 weeks long and covers why and how to use social media as part of the corporate marketing tool box, including strategy and case studies. I currently have 30 students, including students from several countries: India, Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, and South Korea. The textbook: Groundswell by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff.

This will also be a place where I can communicate with my students and link to their newly-created blogs.
Let's rock!

Becky - thanks for starting this blog. Something tells me that you will educate more than just your class!

By the way, love your photo .. so collegiate.

Toby, thanks for being the first commenter on the blog! Yes, I am hoping others who are teaching or are considering teaching this topic at a college will benefit from this, as well as add to the knowledge here. We can use all the tips we can get, huh?

Hi Becky! I got started on my blog last night. Customizing the look and feel was addicting! I can't wait to see how it works out. In the next class I'd love it if we could talk about the long term strategy for maintaining a blog. The idea I am working on would be somethign I would hope to continue over the years, so I'm curious how to plan for that.

Hi ajt,

Yes, it is addicting. I have been playing with this new blog off and on all day.

I like your idea of discussing blog maintenance next week. Now that each of you will have some experience with a blog, it will be much more meaningful! The main areas are creating your blog strategy as well as figuring out where to link in order to add value to your blog (and to other blogs).

Thanks for adding to the discussion!

Becky,

This is great and I look forward to following this project. I am in the process of reading Groundswell myself and look forward to seeing some comments here. A pretty good review of the book is on For Immediate Release podcast, if you are interested. Also a great resource to share with the class.

Becky -- I'm looking forward to hearing your students insights as you go through the class. As a person tasked with applying social media technologies and community-oriented paradigms to a corporate B-to-C web site (nameless for now), this blog seems like it will be extremely valuable. Getting B's to "socialize" with C's is quite a trick.

Jay, glad you like the project. Thanks for the compliment, too! :)

Andrew, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Groundswell. I reviewed it on my main blog, Customers Rock!, right when it came out, and it seemed like a great textbook to use. I like the way it looks at social media from a strategy perspective rather than from a tools perspective.

Jo, thanks for subscribing from the UK! That is the great thing about all of this - it is truly global.

Eric, I look forward to having discussions about your "task" over the coming weeks. Do consumers really want to socialize with businesses? At the end of the day, this is all about people. If we can make it a people to people experience, rather than a people to company experience, we can begin to move towards relationship.

Thanks to everyone so far for the encouraging words here. Students - any thoughts?

It was just an assignment at the beginning but it's becoming a joy :)

Thanks Becky!
